OWSweather.com has developed a solution to even out the category numbers a bit, and go into more detail on what some could be expected. We had a storm that came into the forecast area. While some people did not see Category 5 conditions when it was forecasted, others did.
To fix this problem we have developed something that just might work. Please remember what this system is. It shows what is going to happen in the forecast area.
Some of you may not see it, but others will. We hope this helps. Those above the snow levels we say could use the Flood Intensity Scale. Replace flooding with SNOWFALL.
OWSweather is the first and only source to categorize winter storm systems.
Upcoming - Current Storm Category breakdown -
1. Light to No rain or snowfall expected.
2. Minor rain or snowfall expected.
3. Moderate rain or snowfall expected.
4. Major rain or snowfall expected.
5. Extreme rain or snowfall expected.
1. No wind damage expected.
2. Minor winds expected.
3. Moderate winds expected.
4. Major winds expected.
5. Extreme winds expected.
1. No thunderstorms expected.
2. Small chance of very weak thunderstorms expected.
3. Weak thunderstorms expected.
4. Strong thunderstorms expected.
5. Severe thunderstorms expected.
To calculate the overall category number of the storm we add them together. The final number is the overall category number we will assign. If ALL THREE are Intensity 1's the value does not fit. That would still be a 3 value, or Category one even though nothing is going to happen. If this happens, no storm will be called, it has no category number.
Category 1-Value 1, 2 , and 3
Category 2- Value 4, 5, and 6
Category 3- Value 7, 8, and 9
Category 4- Value 10, 11 and 12
Category 5- Value 13, 14, and 15
